Howdy Pardner

Ever since I rode my first hull waaaaay back in the oh-seven, I've been intrigued by those voluptuous, organically-shaped little (liddle) vixens. The brahman who lent me his personal 7' Liddle then — the inimitable Festus Porkmeyer — laid a compliment on me when he saw me riding his in Crescent City. He said I was "made for" one of those boards. I think he was referring to the fact that I'm hopeless when it comes to riding a surfboard off the tail, but anyway... My interest was further piqued when Manny Caro said my next board should be an Andreini after I ordered my last custom from him.

Then, last summer, I met a American fireman in El Salvador who was sliding his blue 8'0 Andreini across some pretty challenging point waves and we started to talk about his quiver as we waited between sets. When he mentioned that he had one in particular that was too small for him — I pounced. Three months later and here it is: My new 7'0 Vaquero de las Olas. Made from EPS with an opaque cream resin tint, it's super light weight and in amazing condition. Dig the old OWL logo in the first pic!

I only wish I had it for the two amazing days I got earlier this month. At least now I know exactly where to take it when the conditions come together again.

Special thanks to Hank for the bro-bro-bro deal and Jeremy and Giles for bringing it home to papa.

Marc shaped me a 7'2" earlier this year and i gotta say my other boards must feel neglected. It has become my go to board. point, reef, beachbreak, you name it. also have been using a paul gross "whale bone" flex fin on it.. good times!

A wizened old man once told me: I'd rather be a board whore than a bored whore.

Gaz, why am I no longer on your blogroll?

Was it something I said? Word verification: slysacs

Andreini's flooding Portland this fall....

True. There are now two Andreini's that I know of. Actually, three if you count his son.

My 6'6" Andreini vaquero is my absolute favorite in the quiver... it prefers a smooth wave, but can turn a crap session into a good session, which is just plain magic.

Hi Sissy,

That’s going to be a nice match, I think. It sure didn’t take you long to settle into the pocket on that Liddle. While you may have had slightly less to unlearn than a hardheaded lifelong surfboarder, one who tries to force round bottoms into unnatural acts and positions, you instantly connected with that board. And I’m glad to see you’re finally following through on that connection.

I picked up a 7’2” Vaquero a couple months ago. Although it only touches the water once or twice in the six-day surfweek, I’m giddy every time I haul it down the trail. If nothing else, the Vaqueros are great smoothing devices. You really can’t do spazzy shit on them. I think it’s impossible. And they are user-friendly in that what results in a backsplat on the Liddle simply ends in a loss of speed or flow on the Vaq. It’s a pretty easy transition back to the shortboard, quad fish or glider, too. At least in my opinion, which is a hull lot of BS.

My only gripe is the True Ames fin it came with felt a little stiff, especially in combination with the volan weight. With my rigorous surf schedule these days, I’m hovering between feather- and lightweight, lacking the power to move that kind of weight around. But switching in a Liddle 9-incher, the one you used, frees it up nicely. I’d love to try an epoxy.

So let’s meet up at South Beach for a quick lunchtime surf. I’ll leave at midnight. With the survival skills I’ve gathered down here in the Urbs, I could easily liberate your piece-of-shit car stereo — possibly while we’re broing down on the side of the highway. You wouldn’t even know, pussface.

Love,
FP
